内容記述 River traffic had been a vital transportation infrastructure during the Edo era, but it was quickly replaced by railways, which are regarded as symbols of modernization.
This is a general view of the history of modernizing Japan during the Meiji era, but it is not entirely accurate. There were instances, not insignificant in number where river traffic maintained its importance, even during the period of modernization.
Since the 1980s, studies on transportation history-represented by works of scholars like Chiharu Kurosaki, Hiromi Masuda, Yoshinobu Oikawa, and others- have revealed the process of restructuring the transportation network during the modernization transition. While railways did compete with river traffic in certain areas, they also established complementary relations in other regions.
The Tone River serves as one example of railways and river traffic coexisting during the Mid-Meiji Era. This paper will provide an overview of river traffic during the restructuring period in Japan, followed by an examination of the relationship between river traffic and railways in the Tone River basin. The presented facts in this paper reveal that river traffic was not rapidly replaced by railway.
